Expired Writing Funny

Trinidadian writer and stand-up comic Lisa Allen-Agostini walked away from a perfectly good career in journalism to tell jokes for a living. In this event she’ll read a bit of her darkly funny work and talk about how humour in her writing carries weighty themes like mental illness, intimate partner violence and child abuse. She’ll also use a couple of her short videos as case-studies for turning funny ideas into funny scripts.
Lisa Allen-Agostini is a writer, editor and stand-up comedian from Trinidad and Tobago. She’s the author of the surprisingly funny domestic noir novel The Bread the Devil Knead (forthcoming, May 2021, Myriad Editions UK). She’s also the author of two YA novels (Home Home [2018, Papillote Press; 2020 Delacorte Press] and The Chalice Project [2008, Macmillan Caribbean]) and a collection of poems (Swallowing the Sky [2016, Cane Arrow Press], and she co-edited the anthology Trinidad Noir (Akashic Books, 2009). Lisa was a journalist for more than two decades before she became a stand-up comedian. As part of the feminist comedy duo FemComTT, she writes, acts in and co-produces comedy videos and a twice-weekly comedy FB live called The Givin’ Trouble Show.
