Melanie Haws Sakalla is a lifelong Knoxvillian. She has worked in her family’s rental property business since graduating from the University of Tennessee in 1986. As a fiftieth birthday gift to herself, she enrolled in Spalding University’s Low-Residency MFA to pursue her lifelong desire to study writing fiction and is beginning her third semester of study there. She is married, the mother of two daughters, Hannah and Iman, and companion to Opal, her Spaniel mix muse. Her short story “You Never Told Me” appears in the anthology Unbroken Circle: Stories of Cultural Diversity in the South, recently published by Bottom Dog Press.
